About Clear Lake Wildlife Management Area

Located in northwestern Montana near the town of Libby, Clear Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses a mosaic of wetlands, lakes, marshes, and forested uplands that create vital habitat for a variety of wildlife species. Established primarily for waterfowl conservation and hunting, the area supports migratory birds, including ducks, geese, and swans, making it one of Montana's premier waterfowl management sites. The terrain is characterized by clear, spring-fed lakes surrounded by mixed conifer forests, meadows, and ponds that provide excellent cover and feeding grounds for many species. Visitors can enjoy fishing in Clear Lake and the surrounding waters, which hold species such as rainbow trout and perch. Hunting is a key activity during appropriate seasons, particularly waterfowl and upland game. Birdwatchers are drawn here to spot rare and abundant birds during migration periods, while photographers appreciate the quiet natural landscapes and abundant wildlife. The WMA is best accessed via forest roads and is managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, with seasonal regulations designed to protect habitat and ensure sustainable wildlife populations. Though not heavily developed, the open landscapes and access points provide opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. Its proximity to the Kootenai National Forest enhances its ecological significance and offers additional recreational opportunities nearby. Clear Lake WMA embodies the rugged wilderness of northwestern Montana while serving as a critical refuge for wildlife and a peaceful destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
